HUE

 

Approximately 640 km N of Saigon, 48 km SE of Quang Tri, 75 km NW of Da Nang and 16 km from ocean in Thua Thien Province, I Corps. Former Imperial Capitol of Vietnam until 1945. Built by the Chinese in 1601 and modeled after Peking. Was seized by NVA during Tet ’68 and resulted in month long battle in which thousands of NVA, ARVN, USMC, USA and civilian were killed or wounded. Tet ’68 attack was launched 31 JAN 68 at 0340 hours. Elements of 101st Airborne’s 2nd Brigade attacked from the NW, while ARVN Infantry attacked from the E and W. The ensuing battle lasted 23 days.
