EAGLE BEACH

Established on the South China Sea, six miles east of Hue and slightly North of Tan My on 1 May 1969 for incountry Rest & Relaxation (R&R). Companies were sent to Eagle Beach with the cool tropical waters and white sandy beach to recuperate for two or three days after suffering major casualties due to contact with the Viet Cong or the North Vietnamese. Here was a sanctuary where men could collect their thoughts and gain strength for struggles ahead. There the troopers could relax in the comfort of modern enlisted and officer/NCO clubs and enjoy his choice of refreshments. There was also miniature golf, movies, USO shows, massage parlor, surfboards, speed boats for water skiing, pool tables, basketball courts, a day room and a small PX. For those with dental problems, a dental clinic was set up with modern facilities. Eagle Beach was originally built as an addition to Col Co Beach but later the beach was renamed entirely as Eagle Beach. It could accommodate 160 men for Standdown (overnight stays) and the beach itself, 1,000 men during the day. The salt water had therapeutic effects for healing jungle rot/cuts otherwise difficult to heal in the field.
