Son of Walter William Anderton and Helen Robinson; brother of Michael Anderton. Samuel graduated in 1966 from the Venango Christian High School and had attended the Venango Campus of Clarion State College prior to entisting in the US Army. He was with the 101st Airborne Division and died in combat at age 19. He was a brave soldier at Huong Tra on 22 Feb 68. Even under heavy enemy firepower, he protected his position using his individual weapon to kill 3 enemy and captured 4 weapons. He was a member of St. Stephen Roman Catholic Church in Oil City, Pennsylvania, where a requiem high mass was celebrated for the repose of his soul on Wednesday, 06 March, 1968.

On his mother’s side, Samuel was a descendant of the Rohrers and Trubys of Greensburg, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania; and of the Robinsons of Hovey Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. He is one of three descendants of Catharina Truby Rohrer Marshall to die in the service of his country.

Sam’s name is on the memorials in Franklin and Oil City, Pennsylvania. He is also included in the book “Venango County 2000, The Changing Scene” published by the Venango County Historical Society of Franklin, PA.
