I was the Platoon Sargent for the 1st Platoon from Feb. of 1970 to July of
1970. I was transferred from the 1/11 inf. 5th Mech to Bravo 2nd of the 501st.
Some of the people that in my platoon were Percy Harris, Daniel Hays
Tommy C Saylor, Dennis Sartin, John Marks, LT Robert Worrall, Lt Bob
Layton.
On April 9, 1970 one of our squads was hit a sunrise as they were on ambush.
Every one in the squad was hit. Lenord Blachley was WIA, Thomas Gates was
WIA, James Mace was a KIA, Charles G Selman was a KIA, Herman Allen Clay
Jr was a KIA later in the day, Donald Wayne Sistrunk Was a KIA the next day
on the 10th as we were getting ready to move off of the LZ were were on to
hook up with the rest of the Company. He and Clay were no more than 5 to 10
feet from me when thy were killed. Both died of a single gunshot wound. Clay
to the head and Sistrunk to the Chest.
Jeffery Joel Joseph was in a different Platoon, but he was killed on the
morning of April 19, 1970 at sun rise when the NVA were spotted around our
perimiter. This was the day we were being lifted out of the Valley, It was a
long 9 days.
Dennis Huffine was KIA on July 14, 1970, just before I left for home. I was
not with them on this mission as I was busy getting ready to process out fom
Nam.
We were also on Henderson in May the day after it got hit. It was a mess to
clean up.
